Welcome to Abbeyfield In Wales

What is Abbeyfield?

The Abbeyfield Society exists to make older people's lives easier and more fulfilling.  Since 1956 Abbeyfield volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide housing, support and companionship to older people in their local communities. Abbeyfield residents enjoy life all the more because they know that the people who run their societies are dedicated volunteers who are doing this demanding work because they want to.

Abbeyfield provides supported sheltered housing in over 700 houses around the UK.  Here, residents find the privacy and security they seek when managing alone in their own home has become a burden.  They come and go as they please, receive visitors and enjoy two cooked meals a day.  They are free from the worries of maintaining a house and garden, paying bills and dealing with loneliness.  At the centre of these homely houses are Abbeyfield house managers, who are employed to ensure that the house is comfortable and safe, and that meals are nutritious and enjoyable.

Who is Abbeyfield for?

Anyone over pensionable age who no longer feels able to cope or does not wish to live alone at home.  Particular consideration is given to local people (or to those with local connections).  Abbeyfield strives to practice equal opportunities and thus is open to all, regardless of race, gender, colour, religious belief and ethnic origin.  Preference is usually given to applicants in greatest need and those with local connections.

Abbeyfield Wales Society’s Caring Culture Creates Job Opportunities in Newport  Rapidly expanding Abbeyfield Wales Society Limited has added Stow Park Care Home, based at Stow Park, Newport, to their Wales based homes and sheltered housing.Stow Park is uniquely placed in that it is the only totally specialised unit in the area with 36 beds for the care of the elderly mentally infirm.  It also has kept grounds, parking facilities, is close to shops, and the picturesque Bellvue Park.Bringing Abbeyfield’s unique culture, care and team focus into the care home has proved to be a real attraction to candidates looking for employment in this sector.  A record number of applications have been received for the Stow Park recruitment drive, evidence not only of Abbeyfield’s quality reputation, but of Newport’s high standards of people resources, available to be recruited by successful enterprises.Trevor Brown, Chief Executive of charity Abbeyfield Wales Society, the Stow Park home’s new owners, stated “This is only the first step in adapting Stow Park – we have been inundated with real quality applications for the posts to complement the existing friendly, professional and competent team already working at the care home.  The next step is our training.  At Abbeyfield Wales Society our focus is on people – those that we care for, and the team involved in the caring.  Training and induction is the only way to ensure that our high quality standards are met, and sustained, by investing in our team.  This also encourages team loyalty, helping to ensure that our residents, and their families, are able to build relationships with the people that are around them, creating a comfortable, friendly and safe environment.   We could not have achieved what we are doing with Stow Park without the help of the Local Authority, Social Services, the Local Health Board and Care Standards, all of whom have been fully supportive of our quality initiative.”The Wales Society is part of the Abbeyfield Society, a charity first established in the 1950’s.  The Abbeyfield Society now has over 700 supported sheltered housing and 80 care homes in the UK.  With the amalgamation of several well established Abbeyfields in the area in 1997, the Wales Society, with the Newport based head office, was founded.Abbeyfield Wales Society has sheltered supported accommodation, in addition to care homes throughout Wales, including sheltered houses locally in Newport, Monmouth and Usk, bringing privacy and security to residents, two meals a day, and companionship, removing burdens of maintaining their own homes, but without the loss of independence. Team members and residents can expect a very different and unique approach to care – as a charity, Abbeyfield are not profit motivated for a return to their stakeholders, all surpluses are reinvested in the residents care, support and surroundings.  Many team members are volunteers.  Abbeyfield is open to everyone – from all backgrounds and cultures.Trevor said “With Newport’s changing skyline and the investment in regeneration, there is a need for a facility such as Stow Park Care Home, where Abbeyfield’s investment in it’s team, and the care of residents is indicative of the high quality standards that Newport is aiming for as a city, and we are assisting in proving that locally based organisations are up to this challenge.”For more information about job opportunities or the care that Stow Park and Abbeyfield Wales Society can provide, please contact Trevor Brown on 01633 244185.
